Sadly, that one cartoon is a commentary on where we are today. My stepfather was a racially prejudiced man. I once told him that his kind of prejudice would endure until all those of his generation died. Unfortunately, my prediction was wrong, Racial prejudice, like bullying & pitting us against each other because of our differences – race, nationality, political preference & a score of others are alive & well & it breaks my heart. Oh, that it were as simple as these attitudes dying with a generation …

Sadly, spot on Jane. Although a twist in the tail we’re seeing in the UK is that of the successful British Asian who identifies with the guy with all the cookies and so also demonises the (generally white) European foreigner. The problem is there is always an “other” out there if a person or section of society wants to find one in order to feel superior to or apportion blame to – whether that difference is in colour of skin, social class, financial status, language, country of origin, religion (and you could add plenty more). As a person with an Asian heritage that wounds me, even though I realise they are just acting like the other bully boys (and girls) around them and whom they perceive they need to emulate in order to achieve the same status and success levels. The world is an extremely uncomfortable place.

The world has always been tribal but it seems at times we are getting worse. We can hardly talk to each other in the USA anymore. We are so polarized and immigration is only one issue that keeps people apart. Once I get mine, I pull up the ladder so no one can get anymore. A zero sum game is what too many people are motivated by. IMHO.

Tribalism is one thing, but encouraging/manipulating tribalism to protect/extent the power, privilege, and wealth of the few is taking it a step beyond. A very sad, frightening step beyond. Yes, we’re all seeing some of what you describe, but the US seems to taking it to a self-destructive extreme.

  8. A perfectly true and sad depiction of our current — and future, I’m afraid — state of affairs. 💔
