Thoughtful Thursday: on being who you really want to be

Lots of words of wisdom find their way on various social media feeds.  Some of the words of wisdom are pearls and others not so much so.  Sometimes the wisdom comes in the form of humour.  Like this gem, which reminds us of in one small cartoon: having lots and lots of friends on social media may or may not be meaningful.  Make sure you have some meaningful friendships in your life and that you nurture those friendships (which of course may include online friendships, like blogging friends!).

Or this gem, which does a good job of reminding us of how many “wolves’ voices” can be found on social media.  Be wary of becoming a sheep.

In the non-humorous category, these quotes are gifts from the Internet that speak to an important message we can all stand to be reminded of from time to time: have the confidence to be yourself, and take pride in that.

The pressure to measure up, or be like everyone else, or, even worse in my opinion, to be better than everyone else, is always out there.  Don’t just ignore that pressure, defy it.  Be the best you can be according to your own measure.  Enjoy being you. ❤

  1. Yes, yes! Hard work for some of us who come from a place where the dominant culture did its best to make us feel inferior. Yet perhaps it’s even more important for us.

Yes, it is especially important for everyone who faces a societal disadvantage/challenge. But we never know what insecurities everyone else brings to the table. Being a human being isn’t always easy! 💕

  2. I once confided in a wise friend, about a concern over possibly being judged by some people who did not know me well (shortening a long story). Her response? “If someone has a problem with who you are, it’s their problem, not yours.” That comment has supported me over the years. I recently shared with her how much I valued that feedback. She was surprised, as she didn’t remember saying it. Another example of sometimes we don’t realize how much our advice affects or guides others. Friendship really is precious.

What a lovely post. I LOVE the humor. The entire post is inspiring & such an important message … to be your BEST self. I think if we can be that, our best self, & do the best we can in these challenging times, we can have little fear of what other people think. Maybe we can even make some sort of positive difference. And I agree … thousands of friends on social media doesn’t amount to much but a small number of really close friendships, even some extremely meaningful friendships we develop on Facebook are what matters in the end. There is no substitute for the warmth those friendships bring to our lives.

Makes me think that in a world where there are too many wolves and sheep, it would be better to be a platypus. That way no one will know what to make of you.

  7. Your first one about friends at the top certainly speaks to me, Jane. I closed my FB account about five years ago (I couldn’t take the political wars happening on that platform). I learned very quickly who were my true friends because they still kept up with me via email, phone, etc! – Marty

I hear you. Living where I do, I didn’t have many FB friends (or any kind of friends) with US-style political differences, but I will admit to unfriending those few in the middle of the night when the 2016 election results were confirmed! I couldn’t have taken it. True friends are so very important to our well-being.

  8. Words of wisdom both in your blog and the replies, now to absorb and be less cautious of what others think.

I love your conclusion of “enjoy being you.” And that extends to enjoying other people who are comfortable just being them. Authenticity is a beautiful gift! Thank you for this reminder, Jane!

That’s an important addition, Wynne, for us all to remember that we should not be putting our expectations on others any more than they should be putting their expectations on us.

This was so lovely Jane. My favorite was the last image – if only we could see souls, then we would see our real beauty.
