LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: I am extremely grateful that I get to live on the traditional territory of the Wolastoqiyik (Malisset) and Mi’Kmaq Peoples. I acknowledge the damage and injustice that has been done to First Nations Peoples by settlers and that still needs to be addressed and corrected. I promise to revere this land that I live, play and create on; to treat its resources with respect; and to support Indigenous business and cultural initiatives whenever and wherever possible.

I often wonder about such questions, Jane. Not sure we’re all that highly regarded in the animal kingdom 😕

“Alas, poor Yorik….”? Alternative version of Hamlet, set in Lancashire, England. Darwen is a small town near Blackburn & maybe that’s where this version of Hamlet is set….?! Planet of the Apes personified?

I believe it’s yet another interpretation of an original sculpture on this exact theme, undoubtedly inspired by Hamlet’s soliloquy. But the original has the chimp sitting on and around piles of books that include one by Darwin, for the obvious reference to evolution. You’ve introduced an interesting explanation for what I had thought was a typo. Darwen is a town! Hmm, there’s clearly at least one additional side story the artist had in mind.

Is that a calliper on the gorilla’s foot? If so, ‘science v morality’ comes to mind.
Gorilla sitting on books about evolution, looking at human skull. What do they think about evolution? Perhaps one idea is that they outlive us?
Food for thought Jane. 🤔

LOL. I hadn’t noticed the callipers! I think he or she is meant to be a chimp, and they are our closest relatives (very close indeed). All sorts of possible thoughts come to mind! Why do “they” keep having wars and killing each other might be one thought. Why are they destroying the planet we all rely on might be another.
