It’s time to lighten our loads, at least for a few minutes. Daylight now lasts well into the evening, at least up here in the northern latitudes. The hope of spring has become a reality, and greets us every morning with fresh new green landscapes dotted with spring flowers. And to top it off, my husband has just received a new hip, courtesy of Canada’s universal healthcare system. Time for some smiles, with thanks to Marilyn for sharing these with me.
LESSONS OUR PARENTS TAUGHT US
My mother taught me TO APPRECIATE A JOB WELL DONE.
“If you’re going to kill each other, do it outside. I just finished cleaning.”
My mother taught me RELIGION.
“You better pray that will come out of the carpet.”
My father taught me about TIME TRAVEL
“If you don’t straighten up, I’m going to knock you into the middle of next week!”
My mother taught me LOGIC
“Because I said so, that’s why.”
My mother taught me MORE LOGIC
“If you fall out of that swing and break your neck, you’re not going to the store with me.”
My mother taught me FORESIGHT
Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you’re in an accident.”
My father taught me IRONY
“Keep crying and I’ll give you something to cry about.”
My mother taught me about the science of OSMOSIS
“Shut your mouth and eat your supper.”
My mother taught me about CONTORTIONISM
“Just you look at that dirt on the back of your neck!”
My mother taught me about STAMINA
“You’ll sit there until all that spinach is gone.”
My mother taught me about WEATHER
“This room of yours looks as if a tornado went through it.”
My father taught me about HYPOCRISY
“If I told you once, I’ve told you a million times, don’t exaggerate!”
My father taught me the CIRCLE OF LIFE
“I brought you into this world, and I can take you out.”
My mother taught me about BEHAVIOUR MODIFICATION
“Stop acting like your father!”
My mother taught me about ENVY
“There are millions of less fortunate children in this world who don’t have wonderful parents like you do”
My mother taught me about ANTICIPATION
“Just wait until we get home.”
My mother taught me about RECEIVING
“You are going to get it from your father when he gets home!”
My mother taught me MEDICAL SCIENCE
“If you don’t stop crossing your eyes, they are going to get stuck that way.”
My mother taught me ESP
“Put your sweater on; don’t you think I know when you’re cold?”
My father taught me HUMOR
“When that lawn mower cuts off your toes, don’t come running to me.”
My mother taught me HOW TO BECOME AN ADULT
“If you don’t eat your vegetables, you’ll never grow up.”
My mother taught me GENETICS
“You’re just like your father.”
My mother taught me about my ROOTS
“Shut that door behind you. Do you think you were born in a barn?”
My mother taught me WISDOM
“When you get to be my age, you’ll understand.”
My father taught me about JUSTICE
“One day you’ll have kids, and I hope they turn out just like you!”
Do any of these sound familiar?! 🙂
Ah yes the joys of childhood memories!

LOL … I’ve heard SO many of these from my mom & they’re still funny. Thank you so much for my first laugh of the day & a trip down Memory Lane. May your husband have a speedy & uneventful recovery after his hip replacement.. My husband & I have had both knees replaced EACH. The only untouched knees in the house are on the cat & she needs one replaced. PT can be grueling but it’s what gets us walking again. Our Ortho surgeon says it helps to have the most skilled surgeon on the planet but the physical therapist gets you walking again.

Many thanks, Linda. Yikes, knees are really tough. Yes, it’s the physio that really makes the difference; that is, DOING the physio religiously! 😊

Some of those ring true and made me smile as well. The clean underwear is important and it made me laugh and remember. Some boxers I have are decorated with little sasquatch characters – in emergency one time the lady doctor complimented me on them !

Well done to your husband for having his hip replacement – still waiting for mine to get his done!

It’s amazing how much we learned from those standard admonishments, isn’t it?! So your husband is suffering from hip pain, too? Hopefully, once the healing and rehab is behind him (and the other hip is done!) he’ll be ready to roll! I hope your’s comes up soon.

Oh my goodness – these are so wonderful, Jane! I laughed all the way through. And somehow, the one that stuck out was the one about fresh underwear! Oh, of all the things… 🙂

Always a pleasure to bring you some laughs, Wynne. The underwear reference resonated with so many people that it dawns on me that I may not have done a very good job of getting that important point across to my own kids! 😏

Well, as you said in your Mother’s day post, your sons are practically perfect (that made me laugh – reminded me of Mary Poppins) so I’m sure they are doing fine in all regards!

I’m so pleased that someone got my literary reference to Mary Poppins! Practically perfect in every way. Mary Poppins was a favourite of mine long before the practically perfect movie; I read the books when I was a girl. 😊🥰

Usually ER and OR staff are less concerned about underwear than our mothers thought! I laughed at many of these and remembered a few more! My mother’s favourite was “go outside and get the stink blown off you”. Said whenever she wanted us to disappear and so we did! Bernie

Really cute. I wonder how many of these are universal things our parents tell us. I could add a dozen more that I learned from my parents but they might not make your approved education list. For Combat, my father always told me to make sure if they are down, they stay down. For interpersonal relations my mom always said “If you give them an inch, they will take a mile.” As always your writing is fun and thought provoking. John

Lol. For combat, yikes! This does go along with things you’ve mentioned about your father in the past. Re the expressions included, I have a sense that they’ve been around for generations, but maybe not so much anymore. Interesting to contemplate. Mind you, the expectation of the mom always being home and the dad being the disciplinarian is no longer the model for an increasing number of families. Hurray!
