Tough COVID questions at the Pearly Gates

I was going to write a post about the importance of kindness this COVID Christmas 2.0 – perhaps the most valuable gift we can give, especially during such trying times – but that will have to wait a few days.  Instead, I’m going to share a letter to the editor in our local paper today; it’s one that I think really deserves sharing.  It’s only a dream, keep in mind, and some of the dialogue in the dream may not be quite what you’d expect, but I hope you can relate to the spirit invoked by the telling of the dream.

This letter comes from Anne Baker of Saint John, New Brunswick, published in yesterday’s Daily Gleaner.  Thank you, Anne.

Look around to see the divine

In a dream, St. Peter called God down to the Pearly Gates for an emergency meeting: “I have a lineup of ailing COVID sufferers here.  If they end up right at the Pearly Gates, I’ll be overwhelmed, and I am uncertain if I should let them into heaven.”

God could see St. Peter’s dilemma, so he laid out a line of questions to ask the COVID sufferers:

“Did you get vaccinated?”

“If the answer is no, ask them if they thought I would intervene to save them.  Remind them that I don’t intervene.  I’m not a magician.  I am channelled through the scientists who invented the vaccines.  I am channelled through public health agencies which encourage handwashing and social distancing and wearing masks.  I’ve been poured into doctors, nurses, and other health care workers.  This is how I am manifested, and when it isn’t enough, I am there when people are told not to gather in large groups … not even in church.  Did they listen?”

“OK,” said St. Peter, “if they answer no to all that, and they end up at the Pearly Gates, should I send them to hell?”

“Peter, there is no hell.  I’m not even sure there’s a heaven.  I live inside people, not outside … I am in evidence when people do good, when civilization is advanced through science and innovation, when sensible rules for common good are obeyed.  I am manifested through compassion, when people care about each other, help each other, and support and comfort each other.  That’s me in action.”

The dreamer awoke.  St. Peter faded away, and God resided in an exhausted nurse who had just worked a healing miracle.

  2. Anne Baker’s letter is great! And not just because it reflects my thinking about God, heaven, hell, Covid and health care workers… My favourite line is that God is not a magician. When people tell me they thank God they haven’t become ill, I ask if they would curse God if they caught Covid…does their God choose who gets sick?

Her letter reflects my views as well, although I respect that this is not the case for everyone. But reminding people of what the true messages of spiritually are – and godliness, if you like – is accomplished so incredibly well by her examples. And a reminder of our own responsibilities to ourselves and, importantly, to others. Merry Christmas, Jill.

    Thank you Jane.
This is meaningful to me, especially at a time when I read so much sadness and trauma surrounding us. It highlights reality over fiction for me, I’m not a ‘believer’. It emphasises compassion over selfishness, Boris again!
The symbolism of the dream is heartfelt. It makes sense that God (however perceived) is within others and their work, doing good, rather than a mystical entity looked upon only as a challenging threat.

I don’t know how the doctors, nurses, and others carry on in the face of such ignorance and lack of compassion, but bless them, every one.

I don’t either, Bob. We have to all just hope and pray that something deep down inside them keeps them going. We have no plan B in that regard! Bless them every one, for sure.

That made me cry. There is so much power in a few short paragraphs. As a nurse of many years the last line hit me very hard. I would LOVE for this to become “required reading” for everyone on this planet but I fear those who are determined to believe in conspiracies, misinformation & disinformation would miss it entirely or greet it with a laughing emoji. May those with open, caring hearts continue to allow GOD to work through them (us) & never give up because we’ve grown weary of the fight. At some point we may have an impact on those deaf ears, God willing …..

A great letter and I’m glad it was published in the newspaper. My friend who is a devout Christian, when I visited her last year I was unsure how to bring up the covid issue, not knowing what her stance was. I was relieved when she said “Jesus gives us medicine for a reason!”

I enjoyed your post, and also the comments. I think these type of pieces unfortunately are ignored by those who should read them and even angry at those who write them. I want peace and not division.

As a nurse, I truly love this, but as a mom of a young emergency room nurse and his wife too, I worry every day for them. Thx for sharing.
