It’s Orange Shirt Day in Canada, when we remember the Indigenous children who were sent to residential schools.
For followers of this website unfamiliar with the subject or its details: Starting in the 1880’s, the government of Canada forcibly separated Indigenous children from their families, and sent them away to schools. There they were banned from speaking their native languages, or learning about their culture. The children suffered privation, as well as physical, psychological, and sexual abuse. At least 6,000 children died in these facilities, putting the odds of surviving the schools at the same rate as the odds of a Canadian soldier surviving WWII. The last of these schools was closed in 1996.
